Why keys break

A key almost never breaks because of a single bad moment. It breaks because of a long accumulation of small ones, and the snap is only the last of them.

Keys are cut from brass or brass-based alloys, which machine cleanly and are kind to the components inside a cylinder. Brass is soft by design — the key is meant to be the part that wears. Every turn removes a trace of metal, and over years a key becomes measurably smaller than the one originally cut. It rides lower in the keyway, lifts the pins less accurately, and needs more force to turn.

Meanwhile the cylinder wears too. Pin tips round off, springs weaken or clog, the plug develops play, and dirt and old lubricant build into a paste that resists rotation. The two wear curves meet at a stiff lock and a thin key, and the user starts applying torque. Brass under repeated twisting work-hardens and then fatigues, a hairline crack forms at a deep cut, and one ordinary morning the key parts in the hand.

The other reliable cause is using a key as a lever — opening tins, prising lids, levering things — all of which loads the blade in a direction it was never designed for.

The cylinder is usually the real problem

The most useful thing an owner can understand is that the break is a symptom. Something made the key need enough force to snap, and that something is still there after the fragment comes out.

Cutting a fresh key and putting it into the same worn, gritty cylinder produces the same outcome, usually within months and often sooner, because a new key is a tighter fit in a worn keyway than the old one had become. Customers who have broken two or three keys in the same door are not unlucky. They are being told repeatedly by the door that the cylinder is finished.

A proper extraction call therefore has two halves. The first is getting the fragment out. The second is diagnosing why it broke — rotation on a good key, binding pins, corrosion, a misaligned strike or a dropped door loading the cylinder — and telling the owner honestly whether the lock will keep doing this.

What not to do

Almost every extraction that turns from a straightforward job into an expensive one does so because of something attempted first. Three mistakes cause most of the damage.

  • Superglue. Gluing the visible stub to the fragment inside is a widespread idea and close to the worst possible move. Adhesive runs into the keyway and sets around the pins, and it does not distinguish between the fragment and the lock, so a cylinder that could have been cleared easily becomes one that has to be replaced. Glue also frequently bonds just well enough to pull, then releases, leaving the fragment deeper and coated in cured adhesive.
  • Pliers on a flush break. If a usable amount of key protrudes, gripping it can work. If the break is flush with the face, there is nothing to grip, and the attempt shears off whatever tiny lip existed and burrs the face of the plug — removing the one feature an extraction tool needed.
  • Pushing the fragment deeper. Poking with a paperclip, screwdriver or second key drives the piece further into the keyway and past the point where it can be reached easily, and can damage the pin stack on the way.

A quieter fourth mistake is flooding the lock with a general-purpose penetrating spray, which leaves an oily residue that attracts grit — temporarily freer, permanently dirtier. What actually helps is to stop, leave the fragment undisturbed and turn nothing. That is the easiest version of this job.

Door locks and deadbolts

On a residential or commercial door, extraction from a knob, lever or deadbolt cylinder is usually done in place, without full disassembly. What matters is how deep the fragment sits, whether the plug is still at rest position, and whether anything has already been attempted.

A complication specific to deadbolts is that a key can break while the bolt is partially thrown. The door is then neither locked nor unlocked and cannot be closed safely, which turns a routine job into an opening that has to be dealt with promptly — the kind of situation our emergency locksmith work exists for. Where the fragment is out but the cylinder is beyond saving, a secure condition can usually be established the same visit and permanent hardware fitted afterwards.

Padlocks, mailboxes and small cylinders

Padlocks break keys constantly, because they live outdoors and get the least maintenance of anything with a keyway. Gate, storage, shed and pool-equipment locks corrode internally and stiffen, and the key that has been tight for a while eventually gives up. Extraction is often successful, but on a badly corroded padlock the honest assessment is frequently that the lock is spent and replacement makes more sense than a rescued cylinder.

Mailbox locks deserve their own mention. The cam locks used in mailbox compartments are small, their keys correspondingly slight, and they are turned outdoors in every kind of weather. A snapped mailbox key usually ends in a replacement cam lock, because the locks are inexpensive and a corroded one will not improve.

Ignitions

Keys break in vehicle ignitions for the same reasons they break in doors, with the added factor that an ignition is turned several times a day for the life of the car. On many vehicles the wafers inside wear faster than a door lock would, and a worn ignition with a worn key is a reliable recipe for a break.

Extraction from an ignition is done for a verified owner, with identification and proof that the vehicle belongs to the person requesting the work. Where a key has broken there is usually a further conversation about whether a replacement key alone is sufficient or whether the ignition itself needs attention.

After the fragment is out: repair, rekey or replace

Once the piece is clear there are three honest outcomes, and a good locksmith will tell you which applies.

Sometimes extraction is genuinely enough. The key broke because it was old and thin, the cylinder is sound, it turns cleanly, and cutting a fresh key from the original code or from a good remaining key ends the matter. Cutting the new key from the broken one is a poor idea, because it copies all the wear that caused the failure.

Sometimes the cylinder needs servicing and rekeying — cleaned out, worn pins replaced, dry-lubricated and re-pinned to a fresh key. That is often the right middle path, and it is standard lock rekey work.

Sometimes the cylinder is finished. Corroded internals, a worn plug with visible play, a damaged keyway or a cylinder that has already been glued cannot be economically rescued, and replacing it is cheaper than doing this again. On a house with several doors it is usually worth keying the new hardware to match the rest at the same time, which is part of most residential locksmith visits.

Salt air, and why coastal locks snap keys

Broken keys are not evenly distributed across South Florida. Exterior cylinders near the water fail faster, and the mechanism is straightforward. Salt-laden air carries chloride into the lock, where it settles on springs and pin stacks, draws moisture, and corrodes a mechanism with clearances measured in fractions of a millimetre. The lock does not seize all at once; it gets slightly stiffer each season.

The owner adapts without noticing — a little more force, a slight wiggle, a habit of pulling the door in while turning — until the brass has had enough. Gate locks, pool gates, boat storage and exterior utility doors are the usual candidates.

What helps is unglamorous: cylinders specified for coastal exposure on the doors that face the weather, a dry lubricant applied periodically rather than an oil that traps salt and grit, and replacing a key when it is visibly worn instead of waiting for it to fail. A key that has become thin at the shoulder, or whose cuts have lost their sharp edges, is telling you what is coming.
