Proof of ownership comes first
Safe work is the one area of locksmithing where paperwork genuinely precedes tools. Before we open a safe that will not open, we establish that the person asking is entitled to have it opened: government-issued identification, together with something connecting the requester to the safe and the premises — a purchase receipt or manufacturer documentation, an executor’s or trustee’s letter, a lease or deed for the address, a business licence and proof of position for a commercial unit, or an estate document where the owner has died.

We do not open a safe for anyone who cannot prove ownership or lawful authority over it. That is not a formality we can be talked out of, and a locksmith who does not ask is one to be wary of. For the same reason, this page describes what a locksmith does for an owner. It does not describe how any of it is done.
Fire ratings and burglary ratings measure different things
The most common misunderstanding about safes is that “rated” means one thing. Fire and burglary ratings address different threats, are established by different tests, and are frequently found on different products.
A fire rating describes how long the interior stays below a specified temperature while the outside is exposed to fire. It is about insulation, and it is typically achieved with a relatively light steel shell around a thick insulating fill. A burglary rating describes resistance to physical attack — body and door construction, steel thickness, hardplate, bolt work — and is achieved with weight and density.
So a cabinet built for fire protection can be strong against heat and weak against attack, and the reverse is equally true. Products carrying both ratings exist and are heavier and dearer than either alone. When we are asked to recommend a safe, the first question is what is actually being protected against, and the answer often changes what someone buys.
Dial, keypad and biometric locks
Most safes carry one of three lock types, and each behaves differently over a long service life.
- Mechanical dial locks have no electronics and no battery. They are slow and demand accurate dialling, and they can drift or wear over decades, but they do not care about power.
- Electronic keypads are fast, let the user change the code, and on business models support multiple users. The keypad, board and solenoid are all wear items.
- Biometric locks read a fingerprint and suit a safe opened quickly and often. Read reliability varies with the sensor and the condition of the finger, and essentially all of them retain a code or key fallback — worth remembering when judging their real security.
None is universally correct. A safe opened many times a day and one opened twice a year have different requirements.
A dead keypad battery is not a lockout
An electronic safe that has gone silent is the call we get most often and usually the least serious. On the great majority of electronic safe locks the battery powers only the keypad and electronics. It does not hold the bolt work in place, and it does not store the combination, which lives in memory that survives the battery going flat.
The first thing to try is therefore a full set of fresh batteries of the correct type, seated properly, rather than a mix of old and new. A surprising number of calls end there. Where the battery compartment is inside the safe, most manufacturers provide an external contact or accessible tray precisely because they anticipated this.
If new batteries do not restore it, the fault lies elsewhere — a failed keypad, cable or solenoid, or a board damaged by humidity — and that is a service call rather than a crisis. Where a safe holds something time-critical such as medication, it may be handled alongside our emergency locksmith work, but the safe is rarely the emergency it first appears to be.
Lost combinations, recovery, and drilling as a last resort
A forgotten combination does not automatically mean a ruined safe. The sequence starts with records: manufacturer documentation, the original dealer, change key or reset paperwork, and in some cases the factory, which may hold the original settings against the serial number and release them to a verified owner. Estates and business handovers are frequently solved this way, because the information exists and nobody looked.
Where records do not exist, a technician has non-destructive avenues before drilling, and many safes are opened without damage. We are deliberately not going to describe what those involve. The point for an owner is that a forgotten combination does not mean the door has to be cut. Ask first.
Some safes do have to be drilled — a failed lock body, a broken bolt mechanism, or a unit with no recoverable information — and that is done on the owner’s explicit authorisation. Done properly it is a repairable operation, not a demolition: the lock is replaced, the hole plugged and the door restored so the safe goes back into service. The repair is not cosmetic, because an unplugged hole defeats the insulation in a fire-rated body and the steel in a burglary-rated one.
This is also where relocking devices matter. Better safes contain internal relockers designed to fire and permanently secure the bolt work if the lock is damaged or the door attacked. They do not distinguish between a burglar and an impatient owner with a drill, which is why DIY safe opening so often turns a modest service call into a scrapped safe.
Installation, anchoring and placement
An unanchored safe is a portable safe. That covers most of what goes wrong with residential installations: a unit two people can carry offers no protection against someone who simply takes it away to open at leisure. Anchoring converts the safe from a container into part of the building.
- Freestanding safes anchor through the base, and sometimes the back, into slab or framing. Getting that right means knowing what is under the floor first — post-tension cables, plumbing and conduit all matter.
- Floor safes are set into the slab with only the door exposed. They are excellent against removal and fire, and the most involved to install.
- Wall safes fit between studs and are concealed and convenient, but the depth of a stud bay limits how substantial the body can be. They suit documents and small valuables rather than serious burglary resistance.
Humidity, and why the garage is the wrong room
South Florida makes this specific. A garage here is humid, unconditioned, salt-influenced and swinging in temperature all day, and it is where a great many safes end up because it is where there is room. It is close to the worst available choice. Moisture condenses inside, paper cockles and mildews, firearms corrode, and electronic lock components fail early. Fire-insulated bodies can be worse rather than better, because the insulating fill in many designs contains moisture by design.
An interior, conditioned location is preferable wherever it can be arranged. Where the safe must live somewhere humid, a desiccant or a low-wattage dehumidifying rod makes a real difference.
Business safes, turnover and drop safes
Commercial safes have a lifecycle problem rather than a lock problem. Combinations get shared, staff leave, and nobody changes anything. Any safe with a code should be changed when someone who knew it no longer works there, on the same principle that governs a lock rekey after a key goes missing. Electronic locks with multiple user codes make this manageable, because an individual can be removed without disturbing everyone else.
Depository and drop safes serve retail and hospitality: cash goes in through a slot or rotary hopper without the body being opened, so a cashier can deposit takings without holding the combination. With a routine that limits what sits in the till, that changes what is available to take during a robbery. Gun safes carry their own considerations — weight, anchoring, humidity control, and speed of access balanced against keeping the contents away from anyone who should not reach them. Owners are responsible for the storage requirements that apply to them.
